‘What’s On (with a difference)?’ is back again!

In this September edition, we bring you the latest activities and online events to keep the whole family entertained.

Learn more about Casey’s biodiverse environment!

The City of Casey’s environment team invites you to explore the council’s natural environment with their online series. Join wildlife carer Kay to learn about the biodiversity that you can see flying around Casey’s night sky and your own backyard. With 250 species of birds who call Casey home there is lots of exciting environmental facts to learn. Kay will tell you all about their diets, migration and the different habitats they live in, including Casey’s nocturnal birds.

Creative writing with Lili Wilkinson

When: Monday 7 September, 9:30am – 11am

Keen to dust off your creative skills in this isolation period? This is the event for you. Join Lili Wilkinson, sixteen-time novelist, in her workshop hosted by the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), as she teaches how to harness the power of art to improve creative writing. In the hour and a half long session, Wilkinson will guide participants through imagining settings, characters and plots inspired by the NGV collection. You will plan, draft and present a piece of creative writing in this fast paced but fun workshop.

Come ready to write with a laptop or pen and paper and leave with the beginnings of a masterpiece and the confidence to share and present your work. Sign up for the workshop here.

NGV Art Club for kids at home

When: Saturday 12 September, 11am – 11:45am

NGV’s Art Club for kids at home encourages primary-aged children, to use every day drawing materials and designs to stimulate creative thinking. This workshop includes an art-making demonstration, providing children with the chance to draw along with the artist. In this case, you may want to have materials ready (such as paper and pencils or coloured markers) to join in on the fun in real-time! This 45-minute session will be led by Melbourne based Thai artist, Bundit Puangthong, who has experience writing, illustrating and producing children’s books.

Sea Life Aquarium exhibits live streamed

Melbourne’s Sea Life Aquarium is live streaming play and feeding time so you can get up close and personal with some of the aquarium’s many inhabitants.

Watch king penguins play in their icy home, sting rays enjoy feeding time and jellyfish float through their exhibit. You can also download child-friendly fact sheets and build your own coral reef activities. Don’t forget to check back in to see what’s scheduled for future live streaming – you might catch shark feeding time, tropical fish swims or turtle cam!

Get active at home with This Girl Can

This Girl Can is a Victorian led organisation, created to support and celebrate women embracing physical activity in a way that suits them. Whether you’re searching for a short work out or a long one, there’s plenty of options to choose from in the ‘Get Active @ Home’ series. Choose from beginner pilates, Bollywood dancing classes or cycling tips – there’s something for every girl out there.

Introduction to volunteering

When: Tuesday 8 September, 9:30am – 11:30am

Interested in giving back? This introduction to volunteering session will teach interested newbies on the opportunities available, how to identify valuable skills that you can contribute and how to find the right volunteering position for you. This workshop is run by South East Volunteers in Glen Waverly, an established organisation since 1985, that strives to support local communities.

Adult Art Therapy

When: Friday 4 September, 1pm – 2pm

Join Lora McNeil in Adult Art Therapy, a supportive creative session that not only explores the creative process in a mindful way but encourages reflection and personal growth. The environment will be relaxed and conversational, allowing participants to express themselves in their own unique way to find solutions to creative problems and discover layers of meaning within their artwork.

Approaching employers with confidence

When: Thursday 24 September, 2:30pm to 4pm

This free webinar will teach job seekers how to approach employers and recruiters via LinkedIn for increased job search success. Additionally, you will practise cold calling employers with other workshop attendees in a small group setting, to perfect your skills.
